“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6 NIV

Last Sunday in October, we celebrated our First Communion recipients. Their hunger for God’s word is alive and growing as they ask “why” questions. To me, this is another step in a journey that affirms God’s work in us.

On the other end, I'm asked to pray for their time to end: “I just want to go home.” In both cases, I respond, “God’s work in us will be finished by His own timing.”

Paul wrote Philippians from his jail cell, and though there were "why" questions and "I just want to go home" statements, Paul continues to emphasize that salvation originates with God, not human initiative. That sanctification is a lifelong process in which God shapes believers into Christ’s likeness. For some, this takes no time at all; for others, it can be a meandering stream, weaving in and out. And others take a different route.

As we continue to grow spiritually, we confirm that God’s work is ongoing, that God doesn’t stop or give up as human nature allows us to, even though the devil pushes and prods our minds to believe we should give up.

This verse reminds us that perseverance is grounded in God’s faithfulness, not human strength. We all need each other to remind us of our unique spiritual journeys and that no two journeys are the same.
