“but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”
– Isaiah 40:31

As we switch gears in our liturgy, we move from Jesus hanging on the cross, dying, to the season of Advent and the awaited birth of Jesus. United in hope is where we sit.

We are all too familiar with the pain, suffering, and humiliation that Jesus and his disciples endured. We are learning, over and over, about the promises of God in the Old Testament, then 400 years of silence: no mention of God, no prophets having visions or being spoken to by God. They sat united in hope, faith, and trust of the promises made to them so long, long ago.

Then Mary, a virgin, is visited by an angel who tells her she will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus. Yes, the promises are coming to fruition one after another, leading up to the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. Yes, Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, died, and was buried. On the 3rd day, he rose again and is seated on the right hand of the Father and will come to judge the living and the dead.

So here we sit, united in hope of all the promises, knowing that God will renew our strength through the ups and downs of this world, and we will not grow weary. That we will walk ahead one step at a time, progress in moving forward in our faith as we grow and mature in the Word of God during this time of Advent, to pause and reflect on the promises from God and the Birth of Jesus.

Peace,
